The APOP stuff is a bit broken: I didn't have any "real world" APOP
servers to test against, so I just set up APOP on a machine here,
tested it, and called it good. After we shipped the preview I learned
that lots of machines (like yours aparently) have APOP-aware POP
servers but don't actually serve APOP to everyone or anyone. (And the
backing down to password doesn't work because some servers close the
connection after the APOP failure.)

Anyway, it should be fixed in CVS "soon".
