Let's vote!
I vote for the directory. A single file is terrible.
Reasons:
1) Single file can inherently easily be corrupted. I rather be safe than
sorry. One single byte can cause havoc. That's why qmail is now
encouraged to use Maildir rather than mbox format.
2) Single file copy can take a long time. I remembered trying to rescue
a 1.3 GB .pst file. Copying file to my local hard drive; it took a while.
3) Lock. When you have a lock on the single file, you'll end up locking
other people to write. Sharing a single file for multi write will cause
your grief. For example, I have a sales account. I want more than 3
people to write to it.

I don't think we should try to pack everything into one file.
A few reasons we should:
- Programs mostly protect you from copying a piece of a file, but it's very
easy to cancel a directory copy and have an unusable evolution.
- Moving around in one file is quicker than opening, locking and closing
a few different files.
- A file with an extension can be recognized, so if you come across one in
Nautilus you could just double-click to see what's inside.
I think this is a silly thread. It reminds me of those found on
gnome-gui-list every now and then. Isn't there someone with a bit of
authority that can just say: "This is how it's going to be done."?
