Yes. Some of the code is already there, just not being used.

Hm... Outlook does this, and we decided it was really annoying
(because you don't see the message right away even when you DO want
to). One alternative we were thinking of was to have keys that move
the cursor without selecting messages, so you can navigate to the one
you want, and then select it with "return" or something.

Keyboard navigation is pretty much a mess right now. It will probably
be fixed in the release after this next one.
