Can you please try doing:

killev
CAMEL_VERBOSE_DEBUG=1 evolution-mail
(wait a few seconds, then in another terminal)
evolution

and then try to subscribe to a folder, and see what IMAP commands and
responses are being printed by evolution-mail ?
