I wonder if the url shouldn't be more like:
nntp://user host/#comp.lang.c
I have been thinking of suggesting to NotZed that we use fragments for
folder names for *all* providers so that they are consistent. Currently
all the local store's use that method while IMAP uses the path
component. I think it'd be simpler if we just always used the fragment.
(Don't need to change anything unless NotZed agrees, I'm mostly just
using this as an excuse to bring this idea up)

So if you have an e-mail account selected, and you select a NNTP folder with the selector, the entry will show 'nntp://meilof news wanadoo nl/alt.testing.it" rather than just "alt.testing.it". Of course, if you manually enter "alt.testing.it", it would try to append the message to a local e-mail folder with that name.

Because the newsgroup store is an e-mail provider, you can set preferences for sending mail for it as well, so the mail /will/ be delivered if you send it from your NNTP account... I wouldn't know an other way to do this...
