There is a common misconception that putting out new versions regularly gives some sort of reassurance that the product is alive and well. This is somewhat true with proprietary/commercial software as new versions usually mean active development and staying ahead of competition. In the open source world it is usually quite the opposite. There is no need to put out new versions to stay ahead and new versions are the product of small contributions that eventually find their way to a new version.
