I am not unsympathetic, I would like to have images embedded, too.
But it is an old complaint of may different programs. I do CAD with
Solidworks and many part files congregate into an assembly. I just
have to keep them together or it does not work. I will note that
Solidworks has a Journal function that is an MS Word doc where I can
place all manner of embedded information.
Similar problem exists with shapes - embedding shape files within a dia
file would prevent that problem with missing shape files somebody has
raised here recently.
Perhaps it's time to finally enhance the *.dia format. Instead of a
(gzipped) xml file, make it an archive as is the case of OpenOffice files.
For example:
