Re: Remote access causes trouble.

Steffen,

I have lost work when working from remote directories via VPN.

I have messed with Tortise and subversion.  But I am an island, a solitary user, and I have no one after which to model my methods.  Each time I have used it I've assumed something incorrect (probably applying a definition for one of the enterprise version control systems I have had to use (Metaphase or ProE Intralink) and wound up with unexpected behavior.  I seem to drift away from it  when that happens.

Which of these you mention has the best help and other support?  I was looking at Drupal and it looks like it can be used for file management and version control even though it seems to be meant for html docs.

If I could turn off the auto save that would be a nice temporary fix.  I have reverted to plan A for now: work it locally and hope nothing goes wrong.

Michael,

I assume that you're using a Windows share (SMB) over the VPN.
Have you thought about a version management system like SVN or Git?
TortoiseGit or TortoiseSVN offer nice Windows explorer integration.
In case you're interested, these are just some benefits:

* Faster, compressed transfer (only changes)
* You'll be able to work offline and sync later!
* You can go back to previous revisions of your files
* Something like an integrated backup
* Should be much more robust. Have you ever lost some work because
there was a problem writing to the network share via VPN?

Hans: Would you accept a configurable autosave timeout (no GUI intended?)

Regards,

Steffen
