Not really true. The problem is that it is versatile and you can feed it
with proprietary things like data encoded in some strange ways. But
since we talk about generating it, this is not a problem.

As for the obseleteness, we can say it is sort of obsolete, but it still
works.

It is a raster. ImageMagick use ghostscript to raster EPS and then stuff
the rasterized version into a PICT file (or whatever).
