yes, let's try this again.
metacity and gnome-panel will still be available in GNOME 3.0
this is the legacy support we provide in GNOME for the platforms that
are currently lagging behind, or for the users that haven't got access
to the minimum requirements for running the new GNOME Shell.

it mostly is; there are cracks here and there in open source software
with regards to hardware support? absolutely.
well, haven't always been there? hardware support gets better over time
- if something is providing a driving force to make it actually happen.

it's open source. if somebody wants to maintain it indefinitely, it
surely can be as long term as you want it to be.
