For a modern computing environment, access to hardware graphics
acceleration is a must-have requirement. OS X and Windows 7 both require
hardware graphics acceleration to enable their full user experience.
Where they have the option (and I think only Windows 7 does this), they
degrade to what is essentially a "legacy" mode.
We've seen with the Compiz project how lower level support can be
improved once a requirement is made. The chicken and egg situation has
to be broken at some point and I think GNOME 3 gives a good opportunity
to do that.

Thomas
