and I always forget it, but I really shouldn't: XFCE is a great desktop
environment that uses GNOME technologies and works on older hardware.

I want to add a thing: I know that Linux has a driver gap in the GPU
support -- it would be stupid not to acknowledge it. things get better
not because people sit tight and wait for things to get better; they get
better because people work on them and push the envelope for them to get
better. I've been saying these things long before I started working for
a company with interests in this area (Intel): people must vote with
their wallets. they must buy hardware with Linux support; and make other
Linux users buy hardware with Linux support; and let vendors know that
they bought or did not buy hardware because of the Linux support. Linux
users are a minority, and we don't have the luxury of a hardware vendor
on our backs like Apple. voting vendors with our wallets increases our
visibility in the market, something we must do to avoid having to deal
in the near future with platforms that are, if not unaware, actively
hostile to Free Software.

ciao,
 Emmanuele.
