Well, this is just bullshit. You can a) commit a patch for others to
test - that is still
useful, or b) just install automake-1.7 for yourself. It is not that
hard, really, as
has been shown in this thread repeatedly: ./configure; make; make install
or c)  approach the suse people and ask them how they build their gtk package
without automake-1.7

To be truly valuable, such a patch must come with the necessary
testing on varied systems
and the promise to stay around for sorting out the fallout from build
systems the show up
at the next stable release when the conversion is actually tested widely...

Changing build systems is not something one does for fun and lack of
better things to do...
anyway, you'll be happy to learn that glib trunk has been moved to
automake 1.10 in
the meantime.
