I have had the same problem. Sometimes GNOME just freezes even if I'm
online all the time. It takes seconds to start for example
gnome-terminal.

SESSION_MANAGER seems to be ok:
"local/XX78XX60XX.pi.XXX.XX:/tmp/.ICE-unix/2524"
(I replaced some numbers with X)

'unset SESSION_MANAGER' doesn't help either.
