Re: Proposal: gnome-main-menu for inclusion in GNOME 2.18

Hi Jim,

Where should bugs be filed?  I don't see a component in gnome bugzilla.  I suppose one should be created.

Some initial thoughts from just a first look so they may be ignorant and superficial:

* Ellipsis is used for items that require input (eg. "Log Out...") and for those with not enough space.  This is a bit confusing.
* Lock Screen doesn't require input so shouldn't have ellipsis I guess.
* With a largish font size (that I use - getting old I guess) pretty much everything in the "Show:" pane has an ellipsis and doesn't show enough chars to be useful.
* The dialog seems to be shown before it is move-resized so it jumps when the Computer button is clicked.
* The recent documents list doesn't get cleared correctly.  For example: use the standard GNOME places menu to clear the recent documents and the slab list doesn't clear.  Is there a way to clear the list in slab or do you not look at "inappropriate content"?
* If there aren't enough items to fill one column of the "Show:" pane then there is probably no point in showing the second column - use all the space for the first.
* Nothing except "Home F..." shows up in my Favorite Applications list.
* Nothing shows up in my Recently Used Applications list.
* When I drag a launcher from the panel onto the Computer button I expected it to open so I could drop into my favorites list.
* Might be nice to have Sleep/Hibernate on the System action list (using org.gnome.PowerManager).
* The Control Center shell thingy uses ellipsis on names even when it has enough space to show them (uses a fixed with for the item?).
* Control Center only shows Assistive T... and Keyboard for some reason.
* Is there a way to include Places?

Looks really nice though.  And congratulations and thank you for not using submenus.

Thanks,
Jon

No, that's not my proposal.  A hierarchal, static menu, such as the
traditional main-menu is suited to those who are more organized than
others.  Whereas a flat, responsive menu, such as is proposed, is more
suited to people new to the GNOME desktop or people whose idea of
application organization differs from those who designed the traditional
main-menu's menus.  I see room for both approaches in GNOME and distros
can make their own decision about which menu to use by default.
