Well, you have a point on the punctuation issue, but you're clearly missing the point (pun intended). Read any modern Dutch (and most likely this goes for other languages too) style guide and they'll tell you that 4 capital letters in an abbreviation is acceptable, but 5 is just too much of a visual distraction that will break the horizontal flow of a running text (because all capitals extend above the baseline/x-height of any font). Read any book on typography and you'll see this style guide confirmed.
