well, seeing that the number of distros that provide system
administration tools is really low (AFAIK RedHat, Mandrake, SuSE...
any?) and that the GNOME desktop is nowadays demanding lots of
integration for every app, I think that the gst fill a gap in these two
issues

- first of all it provides a (at least potentially) generic way to do
the administration task, and every linux distribution could be added to
the supported distros list with minimum efforts (in fact, I've received
several patches and I'm in contact with several distro developers to
increase such list). 

Regarding to the lfs systems, if the tools are run and don't know the
system in which they are, they ask the user, so the user her/himself
could select the most similar system, if you read:

you'll see that the gst may be run without breaking the system on lfs
:-P

- regarding to the desktop integration, they might be more integrated,
and there are already projects to improve this, but anyways (IMHO) their
integration is good, the rest is just a matter of time :-)
