David,
For the record, I've just taken the Mint14 packages via the
official back-port into my Mint13 LTS build.
Unfortunately it still has the same m-p-i 16 package, so no
further devices are supported.
I'm guessing Mint are taking their core build from the Ubuntu
Precise repos rather than Quantel
:-(
I've posted a note on their blog/forum, but I don't believe it's
high on the agenda at the moment, which is a pity since all the
hard work on m-p-i has been done already.
That is not to understate the huge, HUGE, amount of work
the Mint team have done on their desktop this year to deliver a
fantastic OS; it's just that the mobile device market is moving so
much faster than the desktop development cycle, poor old Banshee
is getting left behind.

Tell Clem that Mint should setup a procedure to issue

It would go a long way to making life easier for us and for
users.
If you are on Ubuntu that means be default the
current stable release Quantal and the development
release Raring should just work. If your
distribution does not have m-p-i release 17
available, please ask them to upgrade and issue
updates for users. It is low risk and adds support
for more hardware.
If you do have m-p-i 17 and it does not show up
if you plug in the N9 after starting Banshee
please file a bug with Banshee (see www.banshee.fm/file-bugs)
Many thanks for the quick reply.
"Less haste and more speed" is the moral for me here I
think.
I should have provided a bit more detail;
I'm running Linux Mint 13 / Cinnamon with Banshee 2.4.0.,
which does not recognise the N9.
Note to Clem perhaps.
