Okay, I've been playing with this pretty much all day, so I thought I'd
share what I've found.

I wasn't sure which commit you were referencing in your link, but the
one about the Samsung S3 was committed on 14 June and the latest libmtp
in Ubuntu was published on 3 July.

In any case, I found a PPA with later versions of libmtp:

https://launchpad.net/~kitterman/+archive/ppa

but those didn't help, I assume because banshee would need to be
compiled against the new library but I'm not sure.

Using mtpfs I can mount the phone just fine. Both the phone and its SD
card show up as media devices, but the problem starts when I launch Banshee.

It will immediately unmount both devices and then it hangs and I have to
"Force Quit" the application. To access the phone again I have to unplug
it and plug it back in.

I thought it might have something to do with the Samsung Kies sync
software that shipped on the phone hijacking the USB connection, so I
installed Cyanogenmon Version 9 (based on Ice Cream Sandwich) and the
problem remained, so I've ruled that out as an issue.

Not expecting a fix but thought I document what I've done in case it
saves someone else time.
