The encoding issue is likely caused by ID3v1 tags. See this bug:

Showing and sorting by the album year is tracked by this bug:

It's not clear what you mean by "directory access". You can filter
tracks by their location, see
http://banshee-project.org/support/guide/searching/. You can also
create smart play lists based on the location of the tracks.
