If you were compiling from source (which by the sounds of it you are)
you should look at the output at the end of the "autogen" step. That
will tell you if the appledevice extension is enabled or not and it
should also tell you why it's not enabled (if it's not enabled). Join
the irc channel for extra help, or attach your config.log which is
created during the autogen process. You could also try looking through
that to see what dependency you were  missing which caused appledevice
to not be enabled.
