Reimporting the folder via media>import media did not work for me. I did have success though. I created a new file on my Desktop. Then moved all contents of the file "music" to it. Next I emptied my Banshee music library, then rescanned "music" (yes it was an empty file, no I don't know why I had to do it this way. it didn't work when I left this step out.). At this point I had an empty Banshee music library. Next restart the system. Move the contents of the file you created on the Desktop back to your music file. Rescan music, your library is populated. The Banshee player works.
 This seems to be a lot of work to get an upgrade to work.

Did you try to reimport the folder / file via media > import media?
