The Rio Karma doesn't have any extensions on files stored on it.
Instead, the database holds the file type and metadata (the file name
is something meaningless, like a hash value).

It was possible to play directly off the Karma with earlier versions. I'm
working on a new Banshee-Karma howto, unfortunately I've been off doing
kernel stuff and things seem to have regressed in the Karma arena recently,
so I'll let you know as soon as it's available.
