I hooked up a new 80GB USB Ipod to my Linux box with Banshee.
Banshee detected the Ipod and I dragged some songs in.
I got copying, then syncronizing, then I ejected and disconnected. I got no music, though the Ipod (and banshee) think that there is a bunch of space in use.

I'm using Fedora 9 with Banshee 1.0 as released by Fedora.
For me on F9 I get detection of the iPod but it never shows up in Banshee. I suspect it is a deeper issue with podsleuth/hal but I haven't had time to properly investigate yet.
This seems strange because not long ago it did work as my memory serves me so I smell a bad update.
Your issue might be solved by running fsck on the second partition of the iPod though, it's quite common for the iPods to report wrong storage information in my experience, they are fragile little beasts.
