Authentication is pretty much mandatory when using 587 - about the only  
reason it wouldnt be is when the server is not publicly accessible.   
Fill in your SMTP user name and password under the section Outgoing  
Mail in the Settings/Preferences/Mail Servers dialog box.  Depending on  
your ISP the user name might be just your plain user id something like  
user@example.org or even user%example.org.  If none of these work ask  
your sysadmin.
