Acording to normal unix behaviour if procmail was appending to the file  
and balsa was too what would happen would be intermingling the data or  
overwriting it (depending on the method you are using), never  
truncating data. The only way I see this could have happened would be  
locking failing completly, balsa deciding to sync the mailbox (after  
some message deletion) imediatly after procmail starts writing and the  
messages you delete are exactly at the end of the mailbox.

Having said that :), what kernel do you use ? do you use mbox ? is it  
on nfs ?
