I think 1 thing that a lot of people forget is this:

not everyone wants or knows how to configure multiple programs in order to
get their mail (meaning sendmail, procmail, fetchmail, etc). I have gotten
a number of emails thanking me for combining the functionality of these
programs into Spruce. Maybe you should take a poll and see what users want?
I just feel that a lot of the newer Linux/Unix users are not going to want
to use Balsa if they are going to have to configure 2 or 3 other programs
before they can get mail. That doesn't mean you can't have support for
these other programs too, but I believe I speak for a large number of
people when I say that I would like to see Balsa do everything on it's own.
The fewer external programs I have to set up, the better.
