Removing mutt-isms?

What does everybody think about migrating away from libmutt?

Since libmutt is built from the mutt program sources, not library
sources, there are all sorts of global variables, intrusions into the
global namespace, and other problems.

It would be nice to have clean mail, and mail protocol libs to call
instead of the hacked-up mutt sources.  :)
