Have you had time to continue on this? I want to finish integrating avr-gcc this week (including the configure dialog UI), and this class would be very useful. If you need any help, I'll be on IRC.

As for functions, I think it's handy if you could get the list index for a given argument string, so you can remove certain arguments. I don't think it's needed for the AVR plugin, but I can imagine it would be handy for other environment plugins.
