Re: [anjuta-devel] Project manager UI suggestions

Hi,

1. I wondering if it's better to keep the GTK_STOCK_ADD icon for the New
actions.
I think you can keep it if you like. By default, the icons aren't
displayed anyway in the menu.

Ok, as I don't really know I will keep them.

3. In the "New Library" dialog (old Add Package), I need to enter a
module name and there is a package list.
Hmm, maybe we want the module name in a bit a less popular place (below
instead of above the chooser) with defaulting to the first module.

I have thought about this too, I will do it. If this entry is empty, it takes by default the name of the selected package.

In general users creating projects with anjuta will only have one module
anyway and those that have more modules usually know what they are
doing.

Depending on the way the interface is working currently, you will probably rather end with one module for each package. I think that's fine too.

Also, I wouldn't mention "Package" in the UI as long as it isn't
necessary. The user should just choose from the list.

I think it can be useful to introduce the right terms here. There are package and module properties dialogs too. I'm afraid it will be confusing if the user don't see where they are created.

Another solution is to remove the module properties dialog and rename the package properties as library properties but I think it will become a bit confusing for a bit more experienced user who will try to understand how it's working.

I would go for directory here, groups aren't a concept anyone things of,
not even autotools specialists.

I'm agree.

What I have seen in glade for example is to add a small icon
(GtkCellRendererIcon) beside each node that has the properties icon and
opens the properties on click. That way it would be visible that there
is something to configure. But could also look ugly, don't know.

I will look at this.

I think that would be a good idea, too, or in combination with the
above.

I have seen that it's quite easy to use a tree model with a combo box. The chidren appear in sub menus. I could use it to replace the tree view in Add Source, Add Library, New Target and New Directory but I'm not sure it will be really better.

I think, I will rather try to add such combo box in the properties dialog and display the project root node in the project view. By the way, it is a step in the direction of loading several projects and displaying them in the project view.

I still need to do quite some work in the autotools backend, because adding and removing target doesn't always work as expected.

Regards,

Sébastien
