The standard leaves handling of parameters entirely to the XSLT processor.
Moreover, $() is lossy as it strips the trailing \n characters.
Not if $() is inside double quotes which prevent Field Splitting.
Field splitting is a different thing.
You're right. I was thinking about embedded newlines although you clearly
mentioned trailing newlines.
