I confirmed that this is a bug with GCC 3.0 (relating to optimisation), and
cannot be easily "fixed" by us.  I have submitted a "Problem Report" to the
GCC team giving full details.  We will now have to await their comments.  If
anyone is interested in the details, contact me directly.
