vala comes with vapi for goocanvas, which is a very capable canvas library. So far I have not tried using it from vala, but I have used it extensively from c and python, and it is a great pleasure to use.

that anyone would suggest for this?

If not can anyone suggest a better/alternative way this might be
accomplished?

Printshop of course being the program to do simple one page signs,
greeting cards, multiple page banners etc.
