[Vala] Canvas for printshop like program.

I have a friend that is looking at building a printshop like program for
Linux and I suggested looking at Vala.  Is there a canvas with bindings
that anyone would suggest for this?

If not can anyone suggest a better/alternative way this might be
accomplished?

Printshop of course being the program to do simple one page signs,
greeting cards, multiple page banners etc.
