Hello there!
There are quite some bug reports in Bugzilla that revolve around the
question "How do I get my media volumes out of my computer?". There
are some bug reports that suggest using a MacOS approach (dragging the
volume icon into the trash bin, like bug #106071), other bug reports
seem to prefer a more Microsoft Windowish way with an icon in the
notification panel. There are also suggestions of using "Eject" icons
in the "Locations" menu and/or the shortcut list of Nautilus and the
gtk+ file selector (I think Banshee uses something like that?). I'm
quite sure that there are some other suggestions I didn't find yet,
but these three suggestions seem to be the most common ones.
There's at least mockups for a gedit-style semi-dialog approach too:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2006-September/msg00330.html
I created a meta-bug (#418197) that doesn't suggest a specific
approach but defines the problem in general:
I added that url there.
I don't have a strong opinion on how this should be, but of these
choices the header approach is the most appealing. It doesn't change
the usability of menus / filechooser items, it cannot be thought to
erase the data from the media nor does it clutter the notification
area with possibly stationary icons (I have an external USB hard drive
that's almost always connected)[1].
It does have it's downsides though, imagine removing a spun-down CD
after all disk caches have been already cleared. To eject you'd need
to open a folder on the CD and for that the data needs to be read and
thus it spins up which can take relatively long with the spinning
speeds being so high, unless the motor technology has recently seen
drastic improvements that I'm not aware of.
[1] This can of course be controlled by setup as usual, but less setup
needed would be a better answer.
