Hello,
I have been using gnome-terminal for a while, and today I tried to
find a way to change the default character encoding the terminal uses. I
tried to do it before, but didn't make as much effort as today. I am
surprised I can't find the way to do this, since I think this is a very
natural feature for a terminal.
Other graphic terms I use much, like xterm and aterm, have the
encoding set on command line. It should be sure that GT would have this
acessible through its profile configuration dialogs. There is a menu to
change the encoding for the default terminal, but I have to set it every
session, for *every* terminal I open!
I tend to use a single terminal screen for many hours, sometimes for
the entire session I am using the computer. Until today I din't bother
wasting time trying to find how to change the default encoding. I
changed many other things, like the default font, the color,
transparency of the terminal. Encoding isn't there.
I found the threads below, on Gnome forums, that LC* enviroment
variable maybe one solution. Not a good one, IMO. And not the best, for
sure. And it could have some undesired side effects, if I understood
well what was said.

I saw no other topics there, on this matter. So I think there really
isn't a way to do this now.
Do you agree that this should be fixed, or there is a reason for this
"feature"?
Regards,
Dedeco
