I was thinking of a variant of this idea, which would be to always have *one* empty virtual desktop so you just have to populate the new desktop when you need it ; you always have one if needed.

Anyway this idea sounds good. Just that it's weird to have the same button doing two opposed things (which are not mutually exclusive, btw)
