Perhaps some of the problems with Nautilus could be circumvented with a
separate directory traversal menu/applet/application? Something like the
Gnome Foot but instead of the ordinary menu you pop up a directory tree.
I would like it to extend from top to bottom of the desktop but stay
along the left side.
Perhaps it could be slightly translucent to tickle my aesthetic feelings
too!
The user will then traverse this directory tree to locate a specific
folder and then by double clicking it will open as a spatial Nautilus
window, and then close itself. If the user single clicks the spatial
Nautilus windows appears but the directory tree stays open.
Items in the directory tree should be valid drop targets and should not
open a Nautilus window. A drag and drop should not close the directory
tree.
Slightly more advanced but still manageable it could have alternate
presentations/interpretations of what the tree items are, something like
a visual representation of meta information? A music presentation would
be something like the artist/album presentation in wmp.
Much of this is already implemented in Nautilus so it needs relatively
little work.
Perhaps a simple description would be "the Nautilus browse mode
directory listing ripped off into a separate menu applet".
