Well, from what I have understood from discussions on various mailing
lists, it seems that it should be possible for apps to specify that they
want the file selector to have a preview pane. That's a condition sine
qua non in this case.

I think such icons shouldn't belong to "applications". For example,
"gnome-joystick.png" is a device to me, isn't it ?

Yes, I've forgotten them. I understand that some people would like to
use the audio mime-type icon to represent an MP3 player for example. So
they should be included in the list.
