Maybe the applet could register itself with gnome libs as the 
'notification manager'. (Argh! Another manager!) If no notification 
manager was registered, gnome libs would pop up a message box instead.

Would it make sense for the taskbar to handle notification, with messages 
sprouting from the relevant button on the taskbar rather than from a 
dedicated notification icon? This would give the user a hint about the 
source of the message, and draw attention to the app's taskbar button, 
which would probably be the user's first target when responding to the 
message.

Perhaps notification should be a freedesktop standard so that Gnome and 
KDE apps can share a notification manager?
