We have this from the ui-guide that was being developed in the hitsquad days:

| In addition, all the spacings have all been standardized in liu of a
| GNOME standard:

|   The notebook children's border width is 6 pixels, not 8.
|
|   The spacing between h/vbox items is 8, not 12.
|
|   The border width of frame children is 6 pixels, not 4.
|
|   The spacing between table cells is 4 pixels horizontally 
|     and vertically.
|
|   The size of the trough in the pane widget is 12.
|
|   Also, anywhere where two or more radio/check buttons are
|     together is it's own separate vbox with a spacing of 0 pixels,
|     even if this vbox is just nested in another vbox.

There has been some agreement that we should eventually have em-based
spacing, but this is hard to do right now.
