I'm pretty much in favour. There's only so many launchers you can put
on a panel, plus you can lay them out with more freedom on the desktop,
so you can have a lot more of them but still find them just as quickly.
That's actually how I use the desktop on my Mac (and my Windows box,
when I had one)-- I don't have any documents on it all, only application
launchers.
On the other hand, when I'm using GNOME on my Solaris box, my screen is
so full that I can't see the bloody desktop anyway, so I have nothing on
it at all :o)
