Okay, I tried that, and I think that fixed it.  Now the database is
~400MB and everything is much faster.  At some point, this kind of
problem needs to be addressed from a user interface perspective....

Yeah, fully agree. For those items configurable in tracker-preferences
we should handle them properly, i.e. forcing a recrawl as in the case of
ignored file patterns change; or forcing a full reindex (warning the
user about that before, of course), as in the change of FTS
configuration (although that is not in tracker-preferences yet anyway).
