Re: [Tracker] Migrating tracker from HAL to DeviceKit

Hi richard,

Hi Richard, Jamie,

ïTracker does indeed use HAL for power management and for detecting
removable storage

As HAL support is optional (not all platforms have HAL like solaris) it
would probably make sense to switch to a raw dbus solution

Yea, I don't see why we can't do this, DBus is used quite a lot in
Tracker, adding another service just makes power/disk management a
runtime component rather than a build time AND runtime component.

the only sang at this stage is which distro's use Device kit? I dont
believe jaunty uses it?

Well, 0.6.92 which we just released is being migrated into Jaunty this
week I believe. I doubt we will get any more versions in. Possibly some
patches will be fed back and maybe an update later on but I think this
should really go into the vstore branch and I don't see it being used
until the next release from Ubuntu either.

Ergo at this point in time, it might be best to see if device-kit is
activated on dbus and use it if its there else fallback to HAL.

Totally agree and from the Maemo point of view (as Ivan said) this is a
good solution until DeviceKit is there.

In the long run we can then remove HAL support

martyn, do you agree?

Yep!
