In a case of a more mobile drive and single use scenarios, it may make
sense to have a HD based index.  user could still have a local db that
could sync with the HD index (or just the HD itself) allowing for
unplugged search.

Similarly for burned CDs and DVDs, could be convenient to create an
index of the contents before burning, that would also be burned to
disc.

To me it's a lot more useful to be able to find out what disc some
file is on, which would require that the index be stored on a
non-removed medium.
