So I think we should really remove from tracker-applet all stuff not
related with the indexing status notification. Also the notification
icon should be displayed (maybe animated) only when tracker is indexing
and will need more then XX seconds (5? 10?) to complete the task.

I would have to see such behaviour in practice to judge if it is
sensible or not.
I could imagine that it would become quite annoying if the
tracker-applet constantly vanishes and appears.

I kind of agree with Luca.
when i tried tracker 0.6.4 from svn lately, i found the current
tracker-applet extremele annoying already . The animation while indexing
and changing to a ! all the time is really grabbing my eyes and
distracting, especially for such a thing as an indexing service, which
should be something that happens in the background and should just work
so you can use it.

i'm working on a mac at work atm and the animation the spotlight icon
has is a lot less distracting as it only shows a very small smoothly
animated dot when new stuff is indexed and this operation really takes
some time like indexing a newly connected network drive.
most of the time you don't get any animation at all, and as i said, even
when the icon is animated, you hardly ever notice it unless you really
look at the icon.

we can make it more subtle or slow down the frame rate

btw, the tracker-applet uses only one fixed size png, which looks really
bad compared to other status icons and applets which actually follow
tango size guidelines. this should definately be fixed before a 0.6.4
release, imho.

what are the recommended sizes for notification icons?

Cheers,
Michael
