the gnome stuff is optional - it wont build it if you dont
have the
dependencies.
It could be cool to have a small qt4 demo app in the tree too.
Perhaps I should look a bit into that (as if I had any time -
bleh!). Anyways, could be cool - if I am correctly informed the qt
dbus bindings should be relatively stable no?
It might help adoption of your program, if you get the kde users
interested.

What is the gnome-desktop dependency used for?
It is only used for the graphical search tool. A tool dedicated to KDE
would have to be made to follow the "KDE HIG".

As for dbus, they say that they don't expect any API changes prior to
1.0.
