so the newer version should be in /usr/bin, while the older version is 
the manually compiled one in /usr/local/bin ?

I tried this, thinking to run the newer version:
cd /usr/bin
./shotwell

but then I get this message:
Your photo library is not compatible with this version of Shotwell. It 
appears it was created by Shotwell 0.23.2 (schema 21). This version is 
0.25.3 (schema 20). Please use the latest version of Shotwell.
