If I allow Shotwell to import photos from the camera, do the photos

to the database, or to my file structure, or both?
Files go to your structure, information goes to the db.
Though I think I am right in saying that the files will be imported to
the dir specified in Preferences > Library Location. I think the OP
did not make it clear whether he has set this to the dir on his shared
drive.
