Re: Use package manager to install (was: Re: Installing sawfish 1.8.1 on Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.1a)

The new page looks great Tieka kazura!

I've been trying to install sawfish 1.8.90 from Flashrider's deb repository. I have a clean Debian 6.0 without desktop in place. I've modified my /etc/apt/sources.list file to include wheezy and sid. I then added the apt.nanolx.org repository. Using aptitude doesn't give any errors with 'aptitude update' but apt with 'apt-get update' does give me errors. I tried to correct the error using apt-pinning and calling the nanolx.org repo as 'release a=photonic' but it still didn't correct the error.

The reason this is a concern for me is that I use dselect for choosing specific versions of what I want to install. Dselect uses apt-get. I can't see inside the nanolx repo to force a specific version install. I have set up my apt-pinning to give nanolx.org the highest pinning. I'm going to jump into this install blind. I am installing on a different machine so will get back to you on what version of sawfish got installed sqeeze/wheezy/sid/photonic. I am trying what feels like the best bet for a sawfish 1.8.90 install since with encryption and my bandwidth each install takes 5-6 hours.

Here is the error I get out of apt-get update:

Thank you very much, Darth Emacs, I've polished the wiki page.

However, you went *unrecommendable* way. You should use the package
manager to avoid troubles, especially after upgrading. It's common
to get into troubles, from for example interference of old files.

In debian, there's precompiled packages, since Chris uses Debian.
deb-src is also there.
